Jesus The Shepherd King

Bible Passage: Matthew 2:1-12
I. The essence of this passage:
1. This passage tells how “Jesus of Nazareth” who was born in Bethlehem but grew up in Nazareth
2. It answers the question how Jesus is the Son of David and King of Jesus when He was called “Jesus of Nazareth”
II. Observations of Matthew 2:1-11
1. The Magi travelled from the eastern countries to greet the King of Jews (2:1-2)
a. They misunderstood where the King of Jews was going to be and ended up in a wrong place!
b. But later, they followed divine guidance to the correct place
2. Herod the Great and the leaders of Jerusalem rejected Jesus as their King (2:3-6)
a. The religious leaders knew the Scripture and truth, but they chose not to act on it
b. Herod viewed Jesus as the usurper to his throne
3. There is a huge contrast between the Magi and leaders of Jerusalem in their responses to Jesus’ birth
a. While the Magi travelled from far places to honor the “King of Jews” Herod and the leaders were “terrified”/“disturbed”
b. They rejoiced greatly (verse 10)
c. They brough precious gifts (verse 11)
d. They worshipped by falling on their face (verse 11)
e. They obeyed to God and did not heed to Herod’s instructions (verse 12)
4. The birth of Jesus in Bethlehem transformed the city into a Great City
a. From insignificance to prominence (2:6)
b Once despised, but now honored (2:6)
III. Descriptions about the Child (verse 6)
1. The Messiah, the much-awaited King (verse 4)
2. A Ruler(verse 6)
3. A Shepherd (verse 6) (verb)
a. Guidance
b. Compassion
c. Care

Follow the Magi and offer to Jesus the worship He deserves and gifts that befits His Majesty
