Matthew 6:10, 33

Matthew 6:10, 33

1. Bible Verse

(a) Matthew 6:10: your kingdom come
(b) Matthew 6:33: Seek kingdom of God first [as priority]
(c) Two dimensions: present and future
(d) The meaning of present: “God’s rule,” or “kingly power,” or “kingship”

2. The Need for the Kingdom of God

(a) Satan appears to have authority over the world and its splendor [Matthew 4:8-9 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”]
(b) Satan appears to be behind human behavior and decisions [1 Chronicles 21:1 Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel; Acts 5:3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit]
(c) Satan opposes the redemptive purposes of God [Matthew 4:8-9; Mark 8:33; 2 Corinthians 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God]
(d) Satan sows evil in human being [Matthew 13:38 The weeds are the people of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil]
(e) Satan snatches the word of the Kingdom from hearts [Mark 4:15 As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them]
(f) Satan entered into Judas, leading him to betray Jesus to the priests [Luke 22:31]
(g) It is in this background Jesus began proclaiming the Kingdom of God, which is in conflict with the kingdom of Satan
(h) The NT recognizes the supernatural power of evil, and its concern is the redemptive work of God in Christ delivering people from these evil forces

3. Jesus brings to this world God’s kingly rule

(a) Jesus’ work invaded the kingdom of Satan [Mark 1:23-24 Have you come to destroy us?]—Through Jesus, God curbed the power of Satan
(b) In Jesus, God’s kingly rule begins by destroying the power of the enemy [Matthew 12:28 If it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you]
(c) The Kingdom is a gift that the Father is pleased to bestow upon the little flock of Jesus’s disciples [Luke 12:32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom]

4. What does Kingdom of God do when it comes upon individuals?

(a) Salvation—restoration of the relationship between God and humanity [Luke 19:9 Today salvation has come to this house; Luke 15:1-2 Jesus received sinners and ate with them]
(b) Forgiveness [Mark 2: your sins are forgiven; Luke 7:47 I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown]
(c) To receive the Kingdom of God, to submit oneself to God’s reign means to receive the gift of the Kingdom and to enter into the enjoyment of its blessings

5. Take Away

Seek the Kingdom of God and enjoy its blessings
