I. People of Judah Enjoyed God’s Favor (597 to 538 BC)

1. Restored Temple (Ezra 1-6)
2. Restored Law (Ezra 7-10)
3. Restored Land (Nehemiah 1-7)

II. God reveals His Greatness

1. He is the one who loved Judah (Vs. 2)
(a) Brief history of his love (original 1, 1.1 to 1.3)

2. He is their Father (Vs. 6)
3. He is their Master (Vs. 6)
4. He is greater than their Governor (Vs. 8)
5. He is the Lord of Hosts (Vs. – 43% of the OT)

III. God rejects their Worship

1. In OT times (Leviticus 1.3, 2.1, 3.1, 4.3), the Jews were to offer

(a) The best of their flocks in sacrifice
(b) A bull without blemish that he may be accepted before the Lord
(c) The finest flour – to go as a soothing aroma to the Lord
(d) A bull or cow without defect
(e) A young bull without blemish

2. Causes for God’s rejection of their worship

(a) Worship without Reverence Vs. 6
(b) Our attitude towards God determines the way we worship Him
(c) Worship without Obedience Vs. 8
(d) Worship without Cost Vs. 13, 14
(e) Worship without knowing His Greatness Vs. 6, 14
(f) Inside Israel – they have forgotten His love that chose Israel (Vs. 2)
(g) Outside Israel – His name will be feared among the nations (Vs. 3-5,11,14)
(h) Worship without knowing His greatness is empty and shallow

3. Result of the complacent worship

(a) God did not accept their worship Vs. 8, 10
(b) Judah’s expectation of God to be gracious was questioned and rejected Vs. 9
(c) God wanted these kinds of worship to be stopped (shut the doors) Vs.10
(d) A new generation would come to worship Him not just in the temple, but in every
place Vs. 11

IV. Era of New Generation that will give Best Worship Through Jesus (Luke 7:36-47)

(a) A Sinful Woman Gives Jesus the Honor Due to Him
(b) Sinful woman learned who Jesus was and bought her best gift Vs. 37
(d) Jesus receives her service (honor) when the whole house was indignant to her. Vs.
(e) Jesus was the guest but received no honor from the host. Vs. 45-46
(f) Her love for Jesus pushed her to do her best Vs. 47

V. Take Away

Take time to dwell on His Greatness and appropriate worship accordingly
