I. The LORD wanted to accomplish His purpose through His Servant

1. The LORD has a special relationship with the Servant (verse 1)

a. Uphold
b. Chosen
c. Delight
d. Empowered by the Spirit

2. The Servant is not identified in the passage with a name, but it refers to a person who would come in the future

a. At Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration, Father affirmed His relationship with Jesus (Matt 3:17 & 17:5 vs Isa 42:1)
b. The writer of Gospel according to Matthew identifies the Servant with Jesus (Matt 12:17-21)

3. What kind of person He is?

a. Gentle (verse 2)
b. In other words, the Servant will not deal with people harshly, but with compassion and worth
c. His gentleness is conveyed with two expressions

i. “A bruised reed” (verse 3)
ii. “Smoldering wick” (verse 3)

d. The Servant’s dealing with people is completely different from the Kings and leaders of Judea
e. The Servant perseveres until justice is established (verse 4) to the bruised and broken (basic human dignity)
f. The Servant will fan and bring out any tiny good thing remaining in His people (verse 3: “smoldering wick”)
g. Justice to the nations (verses 1, 3, 4)

II. Jesus fulfills the ministry of the Servant (Matt 11:28-30)

1.Jesus the Servant invites those who are weary and burdened to him for rest (verse 28)

a. Weary and burdened. Tired ones who need relief and refreshment, who are at the verge of giving up
b. Those who are burdened: carrying the hurts of the past, guilty of the past mistakes, etc.
c. Rest: relief, refreshment: it is a fundamental human wellbeing

2.Those who are “weary” and “burdened” need to come under the yoke of Jesus the Servant and LEARN µανθάνω from Him (verse 29-30)

a. They need to learn by “submitting” to Jesus
b. They get sustaining grace ἀνάπαυσις (cessation from weariness)
