Sermon: God Our Leader In-Charge
Bible Passage: Exodus 33:12-14
I. Background of the Passage
- There was an uncertain future for the people of Israel because they failed God miserably
- At the most crucial period of the Exodus Journey, there was a fear of God not being their leader and protector
- The people that Moses was leading proved to be an extremely difficult people to handle
II. Moses’ position/resolution
- If God was not going to be present in the Promised Land, Moses did not want to be there even though it is a land that is flowing with milk and honey
- Moses became fearful and confused about the way-forward
- While conscious of God’s favour upon him, Moses intercedes on behalf of His “stiff-necked people” for God’s favour (33:12-13 & 32:31)
III. About God in this passage
- God made Himself available to be approached in times of fear and uncertainty (v.12)
- Despite the failure of the people, God looks favourably upon them who failed miserably in their walk with God—GRACE
- God promises to be their leader (verse 14)
IV. Theology of the Passage
- God is gracious, forgiving, and willing to help His people to move on with their life
- Personality, strategy, and money of an individual or a group ALONE cannot reach where one/they needs to go
- What God started, God has to continue, and bring it to final destination
V. How is Moses’ situation, prayer, and God’s promise applicable to us
- Surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matt 28:20)
- I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it (Matt 16:18)
- You have been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit (Eph 2:20-22)
