Ephesians 6:10

Ephesians 6:10

Categories:

Verse 10: Be strengthened in the Lord, namely in the strength of His power

I. (A portion of this specific section comes from Tony Evans’ Victory in Spiritual Warfare)
Spiritual warfare:

1. Spiritual warfare started at the Garden of Eden

(a) The Triune God and His adversary, Satan, are the primary participants
(b) Instead of fighting God directly, Satan fights God’s people
(c) Those who are on the side of God must inevitably fight this battle
(d) Jesus Christ and His Kingdom are the target

2. Luke 10:18: The 72 returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” Jesus replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”

3. Hebrews 2:14: Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death, i.e., the devil

II. Satan?

1. 1 Peter 5:8 Enemy: Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour

2. John 8:44 Murderer: He [Satan] was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies

3. Revelation 20:3 Deceiver: The angel then threw him into the abyss and locked and sealed it so that he could not deceive the nations until the one thousand years were finished

4. Ephesians 4:27 Intruder: Satan is trying to take a foothold. Do not give the devil an opportunity

5. Ephesians 6:11 Schemer: Satan is a schemer

6. One of the devil’s main tricks is to cause you to miss the goodness of God

(a) As he did with Eve in the garden, Satan wants us to focus on the one tree He has asked to avoid by staying away from all the other things

(b) Satan wants you to complain about what you don’t have so you will lose sight of what God has given you

7. Satan often tries to prevent you from taking the spiritual realm seriously

8. Satan attacks the believers in their vulnerable side [it is like the football players have one purpose for watching the game of their opponents and gather knowledge of weakness and exploit them to their advantage]

9. Satan pursues his agenda in four areas: individual, family, church, and society

(a) Satan wants to destroy you as an individual, but he wants to destroy your family even more
(b) He tries to destroy the Church through liberalism and humanism

III. Where is the spiritual warfare taking place?

1. Ephesians 6:12 In the heavenly places: “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms, is against the rulers, powers, and world forces of wickedness located in heavenly places.” [Hosts of invisible enemies working in the spiritual realms against the children of God]

(a) “Heavenly places” simply means in the spiritual realm

2. Ephesians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ

3. Ephesians 1:20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms

4. Ephesians 2:6 God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus

5. Ephesians 3:10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms

(a) Everything we need in our life, God has placed them in the heavenly realms. That is precisely the reason why the war is waged in the heavenly realms

6. If you do not know how to navigate in the spiritual realm, you cannot hope to truly overcome in the physical realm

7. We usually try to fix things in the physical realm by using methods of this world even though this world is not where our problems originate

8. We are like a police officer in his living room shooting his TV because he sees a criminal on a reality show pulling a gun. If the officer shoots at the television, he will have merely added to the mess that’s going on. He might feel better for a moment because he did something, but in the end, nothing has been solved. In fact, things have only gotten worse

(a) In spiritual warfare, Satan tries to deceive you into believing that God is holding out on you and that it is up to you to get God to give you both blessings and victory

9. Satan wants you to think that if you pray more, give more, serve more, sin less, do better, or worship more, maybe God will give you more

10. Doing those things in the physical realm is good and beneficial for spiritual growth and cultivating intimacy with God and others, but those things are not the keys to accessing what God already has for you in the spiritual realm

IV. Verse 10: Be strengthened in the Lord, namely in the strength of His power

1. “Be strengthened” is a passive verb that implies that the strength does not come from within, but from outside

2. The expression implies “growing strong”

3. It happens when the believers are located “in” the Lord

4. The phrase in verse 10 “namely in the strength of His power” is explicative

5. Ephesians 1:20-23: This power he exercised in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms 1:21 far above every rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 1:22 And God put all things under Christ’s feet, and he gave him to the church as head over all things. 1:23 Now the church is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all

6. Paul teaches that the believers must stand in such a way the enemy will not make any incursion in to the target

7. Standing is not neither passive nor static, but actively taking shelter in the Gospel

8. It is to resist the attempts of Satan both to retake territory no longer his and to defame Christ and his kingdom by causing us to fail

V. Take Away

1. Know that you are already in a warfare
2. Grow strong by revisiting the truth of the Gospel continuously
