Ephesians 1:9-23

Ephesians 1:9-23

I. In all his wisdom and insight God did what he had purposed, and made known to us the secret plan he had already decided to complete by means of Christ. This plan, which God will complete when the time is right, is to bring all creation together, everything in heaven and on earth, with Christ as head.

1. Resurrection of Jesus points to what the LORD said about the Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53:10b & 52:13)

(a) Isaiah 53:10b He will see his descendants; he will live a long life, and through him my purpose will succeed

(b) Isaiah 52:13 He shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted

II. God purposed to bring a cosmic reconciliation with Christ as the head (Ephesians 1:9-10)

1. God’s this purpose assumed a decisive stage when He raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand (Ephesians 1:19)

(a) It is a divinely authoritative position (Ephesians 1:20b; cf. Psalm 110:1)
(b) It is the highest point of honor (cf. Philippians 2:9)

2. God has given cosmic authority to Christ—rules all powers, authorities, dominions, and lords (verse 21)

3. God has given to Christ a title that is superior to all titles of authority in this world (verse 21)

4. God put all things under Christ’s feet (verse 22)

5. God gave Jesus to the church (verse 22)

6. With Jesus’ resurrection, God has established a mystical union between Jesus and the church—Jesus’ body

III. The believers may know three important things

1. The hope to which God has called them
2. The rich inheritance which God possesses in them
3. The mighty power by which God energizes them

IV. Take Away

Understand that you are part of God’s plan (verses 15-19)
