1. Jesus calls himself “the Son of Man” (10:45) [a circumlocution for “I”]

(a) Daniel 7:14: To him was given ruling authority, honor, and sovereignty. All peoples [vs. all people in Mark 10:45], nations, and language groups were serving him. His authority is eternal and will not pass away. His kingdom will not be destroyed.

2. Jesus summarizes the purpose of His coming with two words

(a) To serve [In fact, Jesus must receive but He gives—paradox]

(a1) To render assistance

(b) To give His life as a ransom on behalf of many (what is He going to give)

(b1) The price of release (cf. 1 Tim 2:6)

(b3) The payment to secure the release of a slave or a bonded slave

(b4) He gives His life voluntarily for others

(b5) A sacrifice offered in place of a guilty person to remove guilt

(c) The disciples of Jesus must give importance to the [These are the marks of Jesus’ disciples]

(c1) Service of others

(c2) Sacrificing to the needs of others

(c3) Priority must be given to the needs of others

(c4) No quarrel over who is great and first
