Sermon: Our New Identity in Christ
Bible Passage: Colossians 3:1-17

I. Living out our new identity in Christ vs 1-4 – “If then (since) you have been raised with Christ”

A. “Seek the things that are above” vs1

1. The direction of our life is heavenward (Matt 6:33)
2. Christ is seated at the right hand of God (Eph 2:6)
3. Our citizenship is now in heaven (Phil 3:20)

B. Set your mind on things that are above vs2

1. Focus on things above, not on earthly things (Col 2:8)
2. Heavenly set of principles that govern our earthly decisions

C. Realizing that we now belong to Jesus vs3 “your life is hidden with Christ in God”

1. Safety
2. Security
3. Identity
4. Secrecy

D. Understanding that the risen life is filled with hope vs4

1. “You also will appear with him in glory”
2. The hidden life is not hidden forever but will be revealed for all to see

II. Our response to our new identity and position in Christ vs5-14

A. Put off our earthly identity/nature vs 3, 5, 8, 9 (the old identity that ruled you)

1. Put off the idols of your heart vs5
2. Put off being a conduit for sin vs5 (Rom 6:12)
3. Put off your old position in Adam vs7
4. Put off your old lifestyle and walk in a direction towards Christ Vs8

B. Put on the new Identity/nature that is found in Christ vs10-14

1. Put on knowing Christ intimately “Renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator” vs10
2. Put on the identity where Christ is all – Breaking down barriers vs11
3. Put on your new identity of being chosen, holy & beloved vs12 (I Pet 2:9-12)
4. Put on the character that reflects our union with Christ and His example vs12-13
5. Put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony vs14

III. How do we know that we are living out our new identity in Christ? vs 15-17

A. Peace of Christ rules our heart vs15
B. We are filled with gratitude vs15,16,17
C. Word of Christ dwells richly in us vs16
D. Make God big in every area of our life vs17

Make Christ your all (first in every area of your life) thereby finding your identity and satisfaction in Christ only.
