Sermon: The Power in the Word
Bible Passage: 2 Timothy 3:14-17
This passage is an encouragement to stay rooted in the Word of God as the only sure means of growing in godliness
1. The Contrast in God’s people – Timothy needs to be different from the impostors and evil men mentioned in verse 13 and previous, those who appear godly but don’t have God’s power at work in them
a. God’s people are called to be different as we follow Jesus
b. The nature of the gospel call is to be separate from the world, stand against popular opinion, and follow Jesus single-mindedly (deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me)
2. The Commitment of God’s people – Timothy needs to be faithful to the gospel message and the written Word that contains this gospel. How is this commitment strengthened?
a. He thinks about the trustworthiness of the messengers – mother, grandmother, Paul
b. The contrast is the people in v 13, who advance into a worsening condition as they leave behind the gospel and the truths of God’s Word
3. The Confidence of God’s people
a. The gospel is contained in the Scripture. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). The very first book of the Bible contains the gospel in seed form (Gen 3:15)
b. The nature of the Scriptures:
i. Sacred writings
ii. Breathed out by God
iii. Profitable for:
• Teaching
• Reproof
• Correction
• Training in righteousness
Take Away:
