The Knowledge of the Will of God: Husband and Wife Together

Sermon: The Knowledge of the Will of God: Husband and Wife Together
Bible Passage: Colossians 1:9-10; 3:18-19

1. The “will of God” with regard to husband and wife is given in the Scripture

(a) Genesis 1:28: Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth (divine will/command)
(b) Genesis 2:18: Man must not be lonely, but his wife must become his most suitable companion (a man without wife is a sub human!?)
(c) Genesis 2:22: Man and woman are not two different substance, but they are just the same
(d) Genesis 2:23: Man and woman were created to live romantically (man’s first speech was an ecstatic romantic utterance)—man attains his manhood only in relation to his wife
(e) Genesis 2:24: Physical intimacy and oneness

2. Sin brought corruption in family relationship (Genesis 3:16)

(a) Contrary to the will of God in their life, Adam and Eve entertained will of Satan
(b) Consequently, a power struggle emerged (teshuqah cf. 4:7)
(b1) The wife attempts to control the husband
(b2) The husband attempts to overpower his wife
(b3) One of the two attempts to take an unfair advantage over the other
(c) What is it that is corrupting our marriages?
Sin of: entertaining the suggestions of Satan, selfishness, humanism, unforgiveness, hurts, bad relationships…

3. God’s solution for this corruption

(a) John 3:16-18: For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned (NET Bible)
(b) John 10:10: I [Jesus] came that they may have life and have it abundantly

4. The background for “submission” of wife and “love” of the husband (3:18-19) is Genesis 3:16

(a) Paul talks about “submission” because of the fallen nature of woman’s tendency to control/usurp (cf. teshuqah)
(b) Paul talks about “love” because of the fallen nature of husband’s tendency to “rule” and “dominate” tyrannically

Take Away (God’s remedy for corruption in marriage)

(a) Invite God’s kingdom in your marriage (Matthew 6:10) Your kingdom come, your will be done (How does it look when you invite the Kingdom in your marriage?)
(b) Walk after the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) be filled with the Spirit (How does it look when the Holy Spirit of God guides your marriage?)
