Jesus, The Saviour, Christ, Lord

Bible Passage: Luke 2:11

I. The term “today” signifies two things

(a) The time characterized by waiting, being helpless, pushed around, etc., is over
(b) The Divine salvation (deliverance) has begun (God has already intervened)
(c) The term “today” is intended to bring hope to those who were helpless

II. The beginning of the Divine salvation is announced in the context of foreign domination (cf. 2:1-3)

(a) Augustus Caesar
(b) Quirinius, the governor of Syria
(c) The context is similar to that of Isaiah 7-11 (7:14 & 9:6)

III. The announcement came to “shepherds,” those who were in fringes (verse 8)

IV. The content of the message

(a) The Savior: In the NT, the title “Savior” is used for God (Luke 1:47; Jude 25)

1. A strong one who delivers people from physical, political, economical, and spiritual helplessness
2. This reflects Isaiah 9:6

(b) The Messiah: the anointed one, the one who everyone was looking for to rule the house of Judah

(c) The Lord: the Exalted One, the One who is entrusted with all authority, power, and dominion

V. The scope of the message

“All people”—all who are in need of help, those who are in the fringes, dominated externally by situations and internally by emotions like fear of future, etc.

VI. Theology

God provides to those who are in need divine help, leadership, and ALL provisions in Jesus

Take Away

Receive God’s deliverance, accept Jesus’ leadership, and access God’s provisions in Jesus
