Bible Passage: John 20:1-23

I. Mary Magdalene the Mourner:

-1. She witnessed Jesus’ agony and death (19:25)
2. She rushes to the tomb on Sunday between 3 and 6 am (20:1),
a. To anoint the body
b. To wail and lament
c. To see the body one last time
3. She was bewildered when she did not see the body of Jesus (20:2)—added pain to the already existing pain!
4. Though Apostle Peter and the Other Disciple went back to their room, Mary Magdalene continued to linger around the tomb (19:10-11)
5. In grief and sense of loss, she looks in to the tomb for more clue for the missing body of Jesus (20:13)—behaving weirdly

II. Mary Magdalene the First Witness of Resurrected Jesus (19:16)

1. Her agony turned excitement (Rabboni)
2. She would not leave Jesus because of her love for Him

III. Mary the First Evangelist

1. Jesus blessed Mary with the privilege to announce the message of His Resurrection (19:17)
2. Mary announces, “I have seen the Lord” (19:8)

III. For Mary, Resurrection Sunday meant a day of:

1. Excitement, joy
2. End of disappoint and full of hope
3. New beginning
4. Better understanding of who Jesus is and His teachings
5. A day to bear witness about Jesus
