The Bridegroom’s Voice

Bible Passage: John 3:22–30

I. Introduction

1. Last month John was the voice, pointing to Jesus. Today he is the one who listens, and finds his joy complete in the voice of the Bridegroom.

II. The Setting (3:22–24)

1. What John alone had been doing is no longer his alone: Jesus and His disciples are baptizing nearby.
2. John has no problem with it, and neither does Jesus (Mark 9:40).
3. It is John’s disciples who get worked up.
4. Circumstances reveal what is really inside us.

III. The Disciples’ Voice (3:25–26)

1. “Rabbi, that man who was with you… the one you testified about… look, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.”

a. The Argument. A dispute about ceremonial washing quickly became a contest over whose movement was winning.
b. The Complaint. Rivalry dressed as loyalty: counting the crowd, and building identity on being better than others.

IV. John’s Voice (3:27–28)

1. “A person can receive only what is given them from heaven… I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.”

a. Grace: you only have what is given. Everything is received from heaven, so there is nothing to envy and nothing to defend.
b. Sent: identity underlined. John knows who he is not and who he is. His identity is a calling, not an achievement.

V. The Bridegroom’s Voice (3:29–30)

1. “The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice… He must become greater; I must become less.”

a. The Bridegroom’s Friend. John’s joy is not in being noticed but in being near Jesus and hearing His voice.
b. A Lifelong Posture. “He must become greater; I must become less”, not as loss but as joy.

VI. Whose Voice Will You Hear?

1. The voices around us: criticism, comparison and complaint that drown out the Voice we need.
2. The voice in our head: the incessant self-talk that steals our joy and peace.
3. The Voice of the Bridegroom: Jesus. Let His voice shape the voice in our head and drown out the voices around us.

VII. Scripture

1. “His sheep follow him because they know his voice.” John 10:4
