The Cross: The Ground of the Great Exchange

Bible Passage: 2 Corinthians 5:14–21

“He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”

I. Introduction: Reconciliation Grounded in the Gospel

1. Paul writes amid strained relationships with the Corinthian church
2. He seeks restoration, not self-defense
3. Paul pursues reconciliation based not on emotion or negotiation—but on the Gospel
4. The cross is the foundation of reconciliation with God and with one another

II. The Need for Reconciliation

1. We live for ourselves (v.15) – Naturally self-centered and self-directed; life oriented around personal desires, not God’s will
2. We see according to the flesh (v.16) – Evaluate life by worldly standards; misunderstand Christ
3. We are estranged from God (vv.18–20) – Sin has created real separation; we stand alienated and in need of peace with God; the call is urgent: ‘Be reconciled to God’

III. The Great Exchange (v.21)

1. Christ knew no sin – Perfectly sinless in nature and life; fully qualified to be our substitute
2. Christ was made sin for us – Our sins placed upon Him; He bore our guilt, punishment, and shame; endured God’s judgment
3. We become the righteousness of God – Christ’s righteousness credited to us; we are declared righteous before God

IV. The Result: What Changes for Us

1. Forgiven and fully accepted (vv.18–19) – God no longer counts our sins against us
2. A new creation in Christ (v.17) – New heart, new life, governed by the love of Christ
3. Sent as ambassadors (v.20) – Entrusted with reconciliation; called to reflect the Gospel in relationships

V. The Invitation: Be Reconciled to God

1. A personal and urgent call from God
2. Reconciliation comes in Christ
3. Received through repentance and faith
4. Not earned—but received through Christ’s finished work
5. Come to Christ—where the great exchange becomes yours

Takeaway:

Be reconciled to God by coming to the cross of Christ—where the great exchange becomes yours.
